“I sold my manuscript to a pawn shop to afford groceries and the slimy son of a bitch sold it to a literary agent for $50,000. Unbelievable!”
This is not a true story. But it is a true way of processing submission woes. Seeing a manuscript get consistently rejected for years takes a toll. Ever feel that you’ve outgrown your work and don’t even want to bother?
I set my bar very high, especially after subpar treatment in the past. It’s easy to ‘If I can’t beat them, join them,’ but I’m not getting younger and the way social media is going, you got to be more than just a face and XXX characters of text.
As far as this graphic, yes, there is a manuscript being made. Just another to add to the pile of regular submissions. This one, as you can see, will be bite-sized and chapbook-ready (unless I just keep going with the idea) about various ways to ‘sell’ a manuscript. Some are parodies, some are autofiction, but if you’re a writer who gives a damn, you’ll know these feelings.
I hope you’re also selling a manuscript!
I'm done writing books after publishing 27, but I'm still writing and publishing essays and short fiction. Unfinished mss. go to Special Archives at MSU, whose library bought my "literary papers":
